FATHER: We wish to live, sir! PRODUCER: Through all eternity? FATHER: No, sir; just for a moment . . in you. . PRODUCER: And where’s the script? FATHER: It is in us, sir. The drama is in us. We are the drama and we are impatient to act it—so ﬁercely does our inner passion urge us on. Father’s plea, “We wish to live . . just for a moment in you” seems to express the cry of the child or lost self part of the patient seeking a potential space for growth. The theme of a play within a play is, of course, a common device in drama; just as the dream within a story is in literature.
It unites three themes I have attempted to show the links between: it is not only drama, but is also about the value of play, and, most of all, a tale of a successful therapy for all concerned. Mary is orphaned as a little girl in India and is sent home to the care of her uncle, an embittered recluse in a vast, rambling house in the middle of the Yorkshire moors. Slowly, she discovers that also in this house lives Colin, a crippled child, hidden away on a sick-bed. It is prophesied that Colin will not live and his father (Mary’s uncle) cannot bear to see Colin, who reminds him of the fact that the child’s mother (his adored wife) died at his birth.
