Holographic threads can be a single color or feature a rainbow of colors in a single thread and are available in bright colors as well as metallic styles. Wired Threads Fiber-wrapped wire threads can be used to add dimension and texture to an embroidery project. Two popular wired threads are DMC’s Color Infusions Memory Thread and Kreinik’s HotWire Thread. Wired threads are not embroidery threads perse. These threads are not worked through the fabric, but instead are secured to the top of the fabric by couching them into place.
Insert one of the pieces of pressboard into each side of the lining. Hand stitch the center opening closed using the whip stitch or invisible stitch. 6. Hand-stitch the corded trim (you can make your own, see page 102) to the outside edges and across the center fold of the needle case using a whip stitch. Tack leftover lengths to the center front and center back to make ties for keeping the needle case securely closed. 7. From the felt, cut a 3 x 4-inch rectangle using pinking shears and hand-stitch it to the inside of the needle case.
This style of embroidery was popular in Persia, where it was known as shisheh, and once used mica flakes instead of glass. It is now most commonly seen in India. Mirrors for shisha are available in different sizes. In this project I have used ¾-inch mirrors as the centers of flowers placed on the corners of a square embroidered base, which is folded to create a pouch. Starting with smaller mirrors that are easier to attach is the best way to try this beautiful type of embroidery. Note: Shisha mirrors should not be confused with paillettes, a type of large sequin, which are made from acrylic or metal and have a small hole in them for attaching to fabric.
